Academy Questions

Why is the Premier Summer Academy a mandatory part of the FC Willamette team program?

Academy training during the summer months is absolutely crucial to the development of each individual player in our program.  Scheduling academy during this time allows participants to focus solely on improving their individual abilities because the summer months provide the best weather,  allow us to bring in internationally qualified staff and participants are relatively free from other sports commitments .  In addition,  because we schedule few team activities during this period (other than 2 or 3 weekend tournaments) participants are able to focus on individual development in a way that is not wholly possible during the OYSA league season.

Do I have to be a current FCW team member to participate in the Premier Academy?

No,  we do allow non-team members to participate in our summer academy.  However,  you must attend an evaluation practice so that our staff can evaluate whether our program will be suitable for you.   Contact our Technical Director at rowneyt@fcwillamette.org or call our office at (541) 753-4902 for more information.

I have several activities planned for the summer and may not be able to attend every academy session.  Is this ok?

Yes.  Our staff expect participants to miss the occasional session due to family vacations,  medical situations, etc.  Our schedule is planned so that participants can catch up on missed themes.  In addition, to ensure complete learning themes are repeated liberally so if you miss a theme the chances are that you will be at a practice when the theme is repeated or expanded upon.  Participation is not recommended however,  if consistent absences are expected.

Fees  Questions

Premier Club fees appear to be considerably higher than what we're used to in our recreational program.  Why is this?

Fees for premier club soccer are considerably higher than those for recreational soccer.  This is because the costs involved in operating a premier level club are quite considerable.  There are several reasons for this.  First and foremost,  most premier level clubs pay their coaching staff.  This is to cover not only the expertise provided by premier level coaches,  but also the time, travel, effort,  and educational costs involved in coaching a premier level team.  Secondly,  premier level clubs typically have to provide or rent facilities for training and games.  Thirdly,  equipment and uniform costs are considerably higher.  Fourth, a considerable portion of club fees goes to cover administrative costs.

What do club fees cover?

Club fees cover the costs of team game and training equipment,  field rental and preparation expenses,  administration expenses,  purchase of team game shirts, and coach remuneration.  We do our very best to keep the cost of club fees to a minimum and as such,  our club fees compare more than favorably with other clubs.

Does FCW provide scholarships?

We are currently working on funding sources to enable us to provide scholarship support for eligible candidates.  Please email our office info@fcwillamette.org or call (541) 753-4902 for current scholarship details.

What are the OYSA Player/Coach fees?

Each player on an FC Willamette team must register with the United States Youth Soccer Association through their state affiliate Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA).   Player/coach fees cover the cost of administration,  secondary medical and liability insurance,  and the issuance of player cards and team paperwork.  Such fees are set by OYSA.

How are the PQT and State Cup Fees computed?

State Cup fees are included in the Team Fees portion of our Club Fees. Premier or Classic Qualifying Tournament Fees are levied separately from teams that participate in such tournaments.  This usually works out to around $50-$60 per player depending on the number of team participants.

What are the club's refund policies?

Refunds of fees paid are provided under the following Refund Policies.

Playing Time Questions

What is FCW's philosophy regarding playing time?

Since our philosophy is based on individual development we expect our players to receive relatively equal playing time particularly in OYSA league play.  We consider our teams' participation in league play and the majority of the tournaments we participate in as "practice games".   As such,  we expect everyone to play relatively equal time (where injuries,  positional preferences etc, permit).

If I have to miss a practice or game,  will I be penalized the next game?

No.  We realize that young people have many important commitments and often have conflicts.  We do not make value judgments regarding the reasons for missed FCW activities.  Our coaching staff focus only on each individual's long-term commitment to improving their game.

Practice Location Questions

Where are FCW practices held?

Practices for our younger teams will be held in the community where the team is based.  Eugene based teams will hold practices in Eugene,  Corvallis based teams will hold practices in Corvallis.

However,  because we have participants from many parts of the Willamette Valley on our older (U15 and above) teams we will often alternate practices between Eugene and Corvallis/Albany.  A complete summer academy schedule will be held in both Eugene and Corvallis.

Where do FCW teams normally practice?

Currently our Eugene based teams typically practice at the Gateway Sports Complex,  Sports Way (North of the Gateway Mall,  off International).  Corvallis based teams will typically practice at Willamette Park.

U15 and older teams practice on the HS turf fields in Eugene and at North Albany MS.

Tournament Questions

Why do newly formed teams not participate in summer tournaments till after their first summer of academy training?

We want our new participants to focus intently on developing their individual abilities.  This can only be accomplished through consistent training without the distraction of initially playing tournaments and games.  In addition,  some participants on newly formed teams (particularly at the U12 age level) have tournament commitments with their previous team.  Incidentally,  our new teams have never yet failed to qualify for premier league participation,  despite competing against many teams who play several tournaments together before the premier qualifying tournament (held in early August).

I have prior summer tournament commitments with my current team.  Can I fulfill those commitments and still play on my FCW team in the Fall?

Yes.  We do not prevent such participants from "guesting" with their previous teams.

What is the PQT (Premier Qualifying Tournament)?

This is a seeding tournament (usually) held early August for newly formed teams to determine which teams are selected into the highest and most competitive state-wide league,  the premier league.  Teams that do not fare well in the PQT are assigned to a classic league where the standard is less competitive.

Try-Out Questions

I am currently participating on an FCW team.  Do I have to try-out for next years team?

Yes.  Through our affiliation with the Oregon Youth Soccer Association,  FC Willamette is bound by the rules set down by the U.S. Olympic Committee.  To be eligible for State Cup tournament and USYSA sanctioned tournaments we are required to hold open try-outs.

Do I have to attend both try-out dates to be eligible for selection on a team?

No.  However,  we recommend that you do your best to attend both try-out sessions so that you have every chance of being evaluated fairly.  If you simply cannot make one or both of the try-out dates please contact our Technical Director rowneyt@fcwillamette.org or call our office at (541) 753-4902 so that we can make alternative arrangements to evaluate your abilities.
