Posh - 2002 State Champions |
|
It took a while, but the FCW U-16 Posh team finally added their 2nd state title to their long list of tournament successes when they overcame FC Portland Green 1-0 in the State Championship game on May 4th, 2002. This was the Posh's 4th trip to the championship game in 5 years having previously won the tournament at U12. This year's assault on the championship started slowly for the team. "As is normally the case for a passing team like ours, FC Portland put us under pressure in the first 10 minutes of the game," says Team Head Coach Tom Rowney, "but as we settled down we started to create chances and I was confident the girls would get the job done. We looked solid at the back and creative up front, but the engine of our team, the midfield, was really ticking along. The work-rate and composure they showed was top-drawer." While both teams played with the commitment befitting a final, the Posh finally got the break they needed when Kelly Cronkrite finished a breakaway in the 65th minute. "I thought the FC Green team played with a lot of passion and desire. We had lost to them 1-3 in the league season while we were still working on some tactical themes, so we knew they were a solid, well-coached side." The Posh will attend regionals in June where they will face the State Champions from Wyoming, Hawaii and New Mexico in pool play. They have played at Regionals on 2 previous occasions, reaching the quarter-finals in 1998 and pool play in 2001. |
